A reflection on war, power, and the people who are asked to fight it.
Toy Soldier was created during a time when war seemed to dominate everything around us.
I found myself thinking about the uncomfortable reality of how decisions made by a small number of people can send ordinary men and women into conflict against others they have never met.
That thought became the starting point for Toy Soldier. The title reflects the uncomfortable idea of people being moved and placed into conflict almost like pieces in someone else’s game.
Despite its relatively small scale, I wanted the artwork to have a strong presence. The intense red background surrounds the figure and creates a sense of tension and urgency — inviting the viewer to stop for a moment rather than simply pass by.
Toy Soldier was my first drawing to feature a fully colored background.
The entire artwork was created by hand using colored pencils, with the deep red becoming just as important to the composition as the figure itself. It marked a step away from simply recreating an object realistically and towards using color and composition to strengthen the idea behind the work.
