Some of the strongest hearts are the ones that stay when life begins to crack.
Hjerta te Fjell — Heart of the Mountain — is the first original artwork in my “Hearts” series, and one of my most personal works.
The idea came during one of the most difficult periods of my life. Throughout that time, my partner and fiancée stood beside me with an incredible amount of patience, love and support. I wanted to create something that was entirely for her — not simply a drawing, but a way of expressing what her support meant to me.
Her last name, Fjell, translates to Mountain, and that became the foundation for the piece.
I combined the form of an anatomical heart with the strength and permanence of stone and mountain. The surface is hard, weathered and cracked, but through those cracks, veins of gold are revealed beneath.
For me, the contrast became a symbol of both strength and vulnerability. The stone represents the ability to remain standing through difficult times, while the gold beneath the surface represents the things of greatest value — love, character and the people who remain when life is at its hardest.
Heart of the Mountain ultimately became a tribute to the person who stood beside me when I needed it most, and the artwork that started the entire “Hearts” series.
The artwork was drawn entirely by hand using colored pencils. Layers of colour were gradually built up to recreate the rough surface of stone, the depth of the cracks and the appearance of metallic gold beneath them.
Every crack, texture and transition was individually drawn, combining the weight and permanence of mountain rock with the organic and vulnerable form of a human heart.
