Chanel No. 5 is based on one of the most recognizable objects in perfume and design.
What first drew me to the subject was not only the iconic bottle itself, but the materials. Clear glass, liquid, sharp edges and reflections create a deceptively complex subject where even the smallest changes in light become important.
There is an interesting contrast within the bottle. Its design is minimal, clean and instantly recognizable, yet when viewed closely, that simplicity disappears into an intricate combination of reflections, refractions, shadows and highlights.
That contrast made Chanel No. 5 exactly the kind of subject I enjoy exploring — taking a familiar object and revealing a level of detail that is easy to overlook.
Drawing glass is, in many ways, about drawing everything except the glass itself.
To create the illusion of transparency, I had to carefully recreate the reflections, distortions, shadows and highlights surrounding and passing through the bottle. Small changes in tone can completely alter how the material is perceived.
The artwork was built entirely by hand, layer by layer with colored pencils, with particular attention given to the transparency of the glass, the liquid inside and the subtle reflections across its surfaces.
It became both a study of an iconic design and a technical exploration of light and transparency.
