The things that hold our memories may disappear. The memories themselves become part of who we are.
Broken Memories was the first artwork where I wanted to go beyond simply recreating an object as realistically as possible. I wanted the objects themselves to tell a story.
Before photographs, music and almost everything else became instantly available through the cloud, our memories often had a physical form. We made mixtapes, received photographs on CDs and kept boxes filled with objects connected to particular people, places and moments in our lives.
Those objects felt permanent, but they were surprisingly fragile. A scratched disc, a broken cassette or something simply disappearing over the years could take a small piece of that history with it.
Broken Memories grew from that idea — the relationship between our memories and the physical objects we use to preserve them.
Ultimately, the artwork is a reminder to appreciate the experiences that shape us, both the good and the difficult. The things we use to preserve our memories may break, disappear or become obsolete, but the memories that truly matter are carried somewhere far more personal.
Broken Memories was drawn entirely by hand using colored pencils.
The composition brings together different materials, surfaces and signs of damage, allowing me to explore everything from reflections and plastic to cracks, scratches and small imperfections.
These imperfections became particularly important to the artwork. Rather than creating objects that appear untouched, the wear and damage help tell the story — physical traces of time passing and things once used, kept and remembered.
