An artwork about time that required an extraordinary amount of it to create.
321… Time is one of my most ambitious and time-consuming drawings to date.
The artwork takes us inside the mechanical movement of an Omega Speedmaster. Rather than showing the watch as we normally see it, I wanted to focus entirely on the world hidden beneath the surface — hundreds of gears, screws, brushed metal surfaces and tiny components working together with incredible precision.
But 321… Time gradually became about more than the watch itself.
It became an exploration of time — the countless hours behind objects created with extreme precision and the patience required to recreate them by hand. There is an interesting contrast between a mechanism designed to measure time and a drawing that demanded around 700 hours of it.
In the end, time became more than the subject of the artwork. It became one of the materials used to create it.
Around 700 hours went into creating 321… Time, making it one of my most technically demanding works.
The drawing was built gradually, detail by detail, using layers of colored pencil to recreate different metals, reflections and depth. Much of the brushed metal consists of extremely fine individual lines and dots, while countless gears, screws and mechanical components had to be constructed one small section at a time.
The slow nature of colored pencil became an essential part of the work: a highly complex mechanism built to measure time, recreated through hundreds of hours of drawing.
